New Parent Information Night
Wednesday, September 3
7:00 pm
Media Center (school library)

The Crofton Elementary School PTA is pleased to invite new parents to the New Parent Information Night. This evening is designed to welcome you to our school and assist you during your first weeks at CES. This is an adult-oriented night, different from the New Student Orientation in August that was geared toward your children. Whether your child is entering Kindergarten or you just moved to Crofton, we want to make sure you and your children get off to a great start!

At the New Parent Information Night, the parents will:

Also, for new parents who are interested in volunteering at the school:
All volunteers must view a County video on child abuse and sexual harassment, even if you have viewed it in past years. See the Visitors And Volunteers page for more information.

If you want more information about Crofton Elementary, get the scoop with the Parent & Volunteer Handbook (PDF, 275K).

Back To School Night
Wednesday, September 10
6:00 pm
Classrooms and afterward in cafeteria

While Back To School Night is sponsored by the school itself, the CES PTA is very active in support. BTSN is split into three sessions, so parents with up to three children at CES can visit classrooms and talk to teachers. Note: the presentations are for parents, and CES requests that parents make every effort to arrange childcare so that children do not attend BTSN.

The PTA sponsors a Back To School Night "Happy Hour" in the cafeteria afterwards. Learn about exciting PTA programs this year, sign up to volunteer your time and talents for the school, and meet other parents. PTA board members and program coordinators will be available to answer any questions. In addition, representatives from some non-school community events - like Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts - will be on hand.

The PTA is requesting donations of refreshments for our time together. Please bring items according to the first letter of your last name, and drop them in the cafeteria before making your way to the classrooms.

Drop your item in the cafeteria before making your way to the classrooms. After you have toured the classroom(s) and watched the volunteer video, come back to the cafeteria and enjoy!

Also at BTSN, Spirit Wear will be on sale in the cafeteria.

Attention adults who are interested in volunteering at the school:
All volunteers must attend a Volunteer Orientation before working in any Anne Arundel County Public School. The video will be shown in the Media Center (school library) during BTSN, so come after you have toured the classroom(s). We will go over school procedures and view the County video. [NOTE: Even if you have viewed this video before, will need to do so again!] It's a quick and painless prelude to helping further your child's education - just stay for during one session of BTSN and get it over with!
(If you cannot attend during BTSN, the next showing will be after the PTA Meeting on September 15. You only have to attend one session.)

Destination ImagiNation
November through May

Destination ImagiNation is an international program that promotes problem-solving theory to help young people build lifelong skills in creative and critical thinking, teamwork, time management, and problem solving. For more information about Destination ImagiNation, see the group's website at www.idodi.org ("I do DI") or the Maryland DI website at www.imaginthis.org.

The PTA has funded several teams from CES, by paying entry fees and buying supplies.

NASA Club
Two sessions in the winter

Back by popular demand! The NASA Club is your chance for hands-on, science-oriented, fun, building projects. Last year, 150 kids in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade joined. This year NASA Club will be divided into two 6-week sessions.

This is a stellar program. For more information, see the NASA website at www.nasa.gov/audience/forkids/kidsclub/flash/index.html. If you could help - using supplied materials and curriculum - contact the NASA Club coordinator, Tammy Taschenberger

Junior Achievement

Junior Achievement is an in-class enrichment program that educates children in grades 1-5 about the free-enterprise system. For more information about the Junior Achievement program in general, see their website at www.ja.org. To learn more about how you can help with JA in the classroom - no matter what your profession - contact your child's teacher.

JA is fully funded by the PTA.

Science Fair
Tuesday, April 21, 2009 CES gymnasium

Experience the wonders of science at the Crofton Elementary Science Fair!

Science Fairs give students the opportunity to study a topic that interests them. Projects can be as varied as the students' interests, such as sports, music, art, rocketry, psychology, and computers. Through the projects, students will discover that science is found in every niche of the universe.

The CES Science Fair is open to all grades, Kindergarten through 5. Awards will be given for the top three projects in each grade. In past years, the top project in Grades 3, 4, and 5 have an opportunity to enter the Anne Arundel County-wide Science Fair.

The entire school community is invited to the Science Fair on Tuesday, April 21. Marvel at the varied projects and support these students’ efforts!

Science Fair Workshops will be offered to help students understand the concepts of scientific method and what a Science Fair project looks like. This workshop is highly recommended but not required to enter the Science Fair. The same workshop is repeated twice; students should attend only once. Workshops will be held after school (4-5:15pm) in the Art Room on February 12 and March 12. A permission slip must be submitted one week before a Science Workshop in order to attend. Permission slips will be distributed through backpacks and be available for download here, when the Workshops are closer.

For more information about the Science Fair and preparatory Workshops, contact Valerie Reed at valerie.sarisky-reed@ee.doe.gov.

School Assemblies
Monthly

The PTA arranges and funds a variety of cultural and educational programs that are presented in assemblies during the day. These assemblies complement and enhance the school's curriculum. For more information about these programs, see the Programs Committee page.

Spelling Bee
April and May

Catch the buzzzz--the spelling bee buzzz! The annual CES Spelling Bee challenge is open to all third, fourth, and fifth grade students wishing to participate. The challenge takes place in three rounds, with the top spellers at each level progressing to the next round. Challenges begin with classroom bees, followed by grade-level bees, and then in a final school-wide spelling challenge for the CES championship.

The PTA coordinates and provides awards funds for the popular all-school event.

School Improvements

The PTA purchases items for school improvement in coordination with the CES principal. Past items have included a new projection screen for the cafeteria, safety doormat for the front lobby, wireless projectors, window blinds for the Media Center, a laptop computer for presentations, a new piano for the music/chorus teacher, and wagons for the Kindergarten classes.

An ongoing project is the brick walkway in front on the school. Bids are being solicited from contractors to re-lay the winding brick walkway and install new memorial bricks purchased by CES families earlier in 2008. The plan is to have this work completed in early 2009.

Many thanks to the 44 Cub Scouts and families of Cub Scout Pack 731 who cleaned up leaves in December 2008. The Scouts raked and bagged about 300 bags of leaves from the parking lot, lawns, front landscaping, and portables area. Many thanks to Patuxent Companies for donating a roll-off dumpster and transportation to the dump for all the leaves. The school is safer and nicer looking now because of all their hard work. Thank you!

P.E. Enrichment

The PTA provides funds for Physical Education at the P.E. teachers' discretion. Past activities have included Fitness Mania and Field Day.

Teacher Reimbursement

All teachers - full and part time - are eligible for reimbursement of certain out-of-pocket expenses they incur to outfit their rooms.

If you have incurred such expenses, download the Check Request Form to submit the receipt(s) for reimbursement (PDF, 274K). Fill out the form and drop it to the PTA box in the teachers' lounge. Note that original receipts are required. The CES PTA treasurer will write a reimbursement check for you.

Teacher reimbursement is just one way the PTA can show our teachers how much we appreciate their hard work and dedication.

...And the list goes on. Your PTA dollars are at work in your school!
